Akerselva River

The Aker river is the living artery that flows from Oslo’s drinking water Maridal lake, through the city’s densely populated areas, before it ends its journey in the Oslo fjord.

The population of Oslo has a close relationship to the Aker river for several reasons. The river has a rich history closely related to the industrialization of Oslo from the 1850s and after, and today it is a living symbol of Oslo’s inhabitants’ need to unfold themselves in green lungs and the beautiful outdoors. The Aker river is a protected cultural area, and here you can go walking, biking, fishing, or swimming; you can also study the rich animal- and plant life along the river.

Akerselva river Oslo
Walking from Maridal lake to Vaterland park in the city center takes about 2 hours, not allowing time for breaks (9 km). We do recommend taking one’s time and exploring the possibilities that present themselves along the way – spend the whole day or divide the walk into parts and do a little each day! Observe how life along the river changes with the seasons; rushing waterfalls in the spring, quiet swimming ponds, autumn colors on the trees in the fall, or natural snow- and ice sculptures along the river in the winter.

See the Agency of Outdoor recreation and Nature management’s guide to the Aker river.

Below are some of the activities found along the Aker river. On the right are some useful links to attractions, eateries, and scheduled events.
