Private train company UnionsExpressen is now offering daily departures between Stockholm and Oslo in newly renovated 1960s trains. The journey only takes a little over five hours, and the price of a one-way ticket is 700 Swedish kroner, which equals 593 Norwegian kroner.
UnionsExpressen's trains have deep, comfortable seats, wireless internet and power outlet.
- We wanted something comfortable and stylish, inspired by Blue Train and Rovos Rail in South Africa and the Orient Express, according to John Wintherbo, one of the people behind the UnionsExpressen initiative.
In the train's elegant restaurant coach, there is no coffee machine or snack bar. Instead you can eat well and cheap from the à la carte menu and choose between excellent wines and champagnes. The most expensive main course is only 145 Swedish kroner, and breakfast and lunch is also served.
On the way between Stockholm and Oslo, UnionsExpressen stops at Södertälje, Hallsberg, Karlstad, Kongsvinger and Lillestrøm. The trains depart from Stockholm at 4 pm every day except Saturday and from Oslo at 7.17 am every day.
Tickets available at: www.unionsexpressen.com or directly on the train.
