Nobel Peace Prize

Karl Johans gate

In 1895 Alfred Nobel drew up a will in which his wealth was to be devoted to the annual award of five prizes "to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind."

The will laid down that the Nobel Peace Prize for Peace was to be awarded in Norway by a five-member committee appointed by the Norwegian Storting (the legislative assembly). The first Nobel Peace Prize was awarded in 1901, and it is always awarded on December 10th.

In connection with the prize, a Nobel concert is held on the following day, where internationally known artists pay tribute to the prize winner through their music and performance.

In June 2005 Nobel Peace Centre opened. This centre is located in the old Vestbanen building and displays information about the winners as well as focuses on the struggle between opposites.

Behind every laureate there is a dramatic story, and to contribute to people's concern about war, peace and conflict resolution it may be necessary to use strong measures to tell the stories and highlight the topics.
