The Sun in Kragerø

Edvard Munch arrived in the fjord-side town of Kragerø in 1909, after a long period of illness. He rented a house with a view of the Oslo fjord, and entered into one of the most joyful and productive periods of his artistic life.

The nature of Kragerø inspired Munch’s vitalistic mural The Sun – a rising sun, the purest symbol of the force of life, rendered with bold, powerful brush strokes. Other motifs from Kragerø appear in Munchs art as well: the picturesque streets, the changing of seasons, and people going about their daily lives. uses cookies
