The city lies beautifully around the innermost part of the Oslofjord, surrounded by forested hills, and this location gives Oslo qualities that you normally don’t expect to find in a capital city.
The capital has about 550 000 inhabitants, a low number compared to most European capitals. Interestingly enough it is one of the largest in size. Oslo covers 450 sq.km. – and 2/3 of it is “green”! There are forests and farmlands, as well as 40 islands and 343 lakes within the city limits. The city’s parks also cover eight sq. km.
In Oslo you get both culture and nature, and it is easy to combine cultural experiences in the big city with the outdoors and activities in the forest areas, by the fjord, or along the Aker river.
That the outdoors are a natural part of the lives of Oslo’s inhabitants is evident when you see the number of people with skis on the subway to the forests around the city on a nice winter day! Or by the number of disposable barbeques on the ferry to the islands or on the bus to Bygdøy on a beautiful summer day… Oslo offers outdoor activities for everyone throughout the year!
