R.E.M. has been an influential and popular band in the US for over 25 years. Their big commercial breakthrough came in 1991, with the international hit album "Out of Time" and the hugely popular song "Losing my Religion". The album "Automatic for the People" came a few years later, and hits like "Everybody Hurts" and "Man on the Moon" confirmed the band's superstar status.

Drummer Bill Berry left the band in the late 90s, but vocalist Michael Stipe, bassist Mike Mills and guitarist Peter Buck kept going as a trio. Spring 2008 marked the release of R.E.M.'s 14th studio album, "Accelerate".

R.E.M. has played in Oslo several times before, most recently in 2005, when they played both in Oslo Spektrum and at Ullevaal stadion.
