The ruins of Mariakirken (St. Mary's church)
Ruins of the medieval church Mariakirken (St. Mary's church).
Mariakirken was originally built in the year 1050 AD, but rebuilt and expanded several times through the following centuries. In the beginning of the 14th century, it was the third largest church in the country.
In the Middle Ages it was the royal chapel. King Håkon V Magnusson (1270-1319) and his kin were buried there, which gave the church strong symbolic meaning. In 1312, Håkon V gave away his daughter Ingebjørg, his only legitimate child, in this beautiful church, with royal guests, clergymen and the most important Norwegian noblemen present.
