Oslo East

Oslo East encompasses a large, diverse area, where food from all corners of the world, nightlife and cultural events meet the oldest chapters of Oslo’s history.

Just a couple of metres east of Oslo Central Station is the Grønland district with its pubs and modern bars, restaurants with food from all over the world, vegetable stalls with good-value produce and cheap fabric stores.

From Grønland you can walk either to Tøyen where you find the Botanical Garden or Kampen with its charming ensemble of wooden houses.

Not far away is Klosterenga park, a sculpture park where water connects art from different cultures.

To the south, you find many historical landmarks in Gamlebyen (EN: the old town) and Ekeberg. The archaeological relics at Ekeberg date back several thousand years, making them the earliest signs of civilisation in the Oslo area.

On the Ekeberg hill you can also visit the place where Munch was inspired to paint Scream, marvel at the modern sculptures in the Ekebergparken sculpture park, which also boasts one of the best views of Oslo and the fjord. In Gamlebyen’s Middelalderparken ('park of the Middle Ages') are the ruins of Oslo’s oldest stone buildings.
