Photo exhibition: Nanoq - the great white bear
A kind of photo exhibition you have never seen before!
Topic: taxidermied polar bears
The Fram museum reveals in a new exhibition man's fascination for the most powerful of all animals: the polar bear! The polar bear have thrilled us for centuries, not only out in the wilderness and as a natural wonder, but also as a trophy and as decoration in bourgeois homes. Explorers and adventurers have in all periods of time feared the hungry polar bear in the Arctic, but, stuffed and exhibited in museums and private homes, it became for many something to be proud of, especially among the aristocrats in England.
The artists Bryndis Snæbjörnsdóttir and Mark Wilson have taken the pictures. They started their research project on taxidermied polar bears in year 2000. With the help of museums, they travelled around in England finding taxidermied polar bears. They were photographed as they found them in situ - some well exposed in castles, others lying dirty and forgotten hidden behind old and useless things. The exhibition has earlier been shown at The Horniman museum in London, at the University Museum of Natural History in Oxford, in Denmark, in Iceland and at the Faroe Islands. And, now you can see these pictures in The Fram Museum, Oslo's polar center. It will last till the end of september.
