Finally - An Opera House to Trample On!
These words were spoken by Norwegian Opera Director Mr Bjørn Simensen after more than 20.000 Norwegians visited the roof of this exceptional building in 2007. Sloping towards the Oslo Fjord, the structure reminds visitors of grand Norwegian Nature.
“The building will become one of the most monumental icons of Norway as a cultural nation, and The Norwegian National Opera will be of great importance to Norwegian culture and society.” This is what the Norweigan Parliamentary proposition of 2001 read, which in turn initiated the construction of Norway’s new Opera house. In April 2008, the the official opening will take place –the opening of a building which will change the face of Oslo.
The Norwegian architectural company, Snøhetta, won the international architectural competition with this conceptual view; “The new Opera house will be a transition between the densest part of the city centre and the open fjord; erected in white marble and with big open windows, it will give people the opportunity to look in and have a view out. The thoughts will be led to nature and ice –culture and experience. The attention will be drawn to this unique white house in the sea –from the air, the sea, the railway and the main roads –the most important gateways to Oslo.”
With the opening in 2008, the building will be filled with music, opera, ballet and people. Inside, one of the most beautiful and modern opera halls is to be found. Oslo wishes you a very warm welcome to the new pride of Norway in Bjørvika!
