To date, no dramatist has created such a lasting impression at the National Theatre as that left by Henrik Ibsen. The plays of Ibsen are some of the most performed and most visited performances put on by theatres both in Norway and abroad.

The establishment of the Ibsen Festival in 1990 has helped to open doors for the National Theatre in the international arena. During the Festival the National Theatre produces its own Ibsen productions for all of its stages and at the same time hosts foreign and Norwegian guest performances. It also holds international seminars, guided tours, concerts and readings. During the national centenary celebrations held in 2006 to mark the death of Ibsen the National Theatre hosted guest performances from 15 different countries.
