I love escaping into a quiet backyard for a drink or meal, away from the crowded streets. oslo has some really nice backyard bars and cafes, but they're not so easy to find if you don't know about them. here are some of my favourite backyards in Oslo:
*Bare Jazz (in Grensen) - right downtown but easy to miss. soft jazz music in this combined cafe, pub and jazz record store. this is where the photo is from.
*Dattera til Hagen (at Grønland) - all the chairs are in different colours and patterns, makes the place look very summery. great place any time of day.
*Den gode café (Fredensborgveien, near the main library) - old furniture and nick-nacks, friendly hippie staff and good, cheap food.
*Garage (in Grensen) - beer and rock music!
* Cajun Café (rosenkrantz gate) - for a backyard meal, try this little nook. not the cheapest but it has atmosphere.
if you're visiting oslo this summer, don't go to the sidewalk restaurants along the main street, check out a cosy backyard!
