Join us on a visit to one of Scandinavia’s most vibrant art spaces.

Henie Onstad Art Centre is located at Høvikodden, only a short bus ride outside Oslo. For 50 years it as been a vital hub for modern and contemporary art, with an ambience and surroundings that put it on par with famous art destinations like Louisiana and Storm King.

What greets you when you first arrive at Høvikodden is a captivating building, organically placed in a tranquil seaside landscape. Carefully crafted from glass, stone and natural concrete, it brings to mind the great masters of modern architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier og Mies van der Rohe.

Entering the tinted glass doors, you are transported out of everyday life and into a serene space that immerses you in a world of art and great ideas.

At any given point, the centre hosts at least two large exhibitions with guests works and highlights from its extensive permanent collection.

The museum also owns an installation by the world-famous polka dot queen Yayoi Kusama called The Hymn of Life: A dark, mirror-covered space with pulsating lamps that change colour, perfect for a few moments of reflection.

Walking through Henie Onstad’s many exhibition rooms and hallways, you’ll also come across traces of all the creative activities that have taken place at the centre through the years.

“I want the Beatles to play at my art centre”, co-founder Sonja Henie famously stated, expressing her desire for a place where great art is not only displayed, but also created and performed.

The Beatles never made it, but Henie Onstad has hosted legendary events with performers like John Cage, Laurie Anderson, Stockhausen, Soft Machine and Mauricio Kagel.

 




If you step outside for a while, you’ll find yourself in a beautiful park with public trails, shorelines and 20-something sculptures with ties to the centre’s exhibition history, highly responsive to their scenic setting.

The sculpture collection includes highlights by famous Norwegian sculptors like Per Inge Bjørlo and Åse Texmon Ryhg, in addition to international names such as Emile Giliolis and Terry Haass.
