Viking history

The Oslo region was a prosperous and important area during the Viking Age (800 to 1050 AD). In the 800s, Skiringssal in Vestfold was an international trade centre and the country’s most densely populated place, and Oslo is one of the cities claimed to be founded by Vikings. Today, you’ll find several Viking remnants in the region, including burial mounds and Oslo’s Viking Ship Museum, where the world’s best preserved viking ship is on display.
