The man behind the lens

Olav Stubberud, the man with the camera in the legendary snowboarding crew RK1, presents his local favourite spots.

'RK1 is where everything pretty much started in every sense', says Olav.

RK1 consists of four childhood friends; Olav Stubberud, Alek Østreng, Ståle Sandbech, and Len Jørgensen, who grew up to become some of the world's most influential snowboarders. The name RK1 is derived from Rykkinn, the neighbourhood just outside of Oslo where Olav, Alek and Ståle grew up.

'I grew up with Alek Østreng and Ståle Sandbech, who put me on to snowboarding. And that took me on to photography, which has been my passion ever since.'

In their local skiing centre, Kirkerudbakken, the four of them learned to snowboard, and Olav started taking photos of the other guys doing tricks. Fast forward to today, and we're talking to one of the best action sports photographers in the business.

The story of the snowboarding crew RK1:

OLAV'S FAVOURITE INSTA SPOTS

We asked Olav to share some of his favourite spots in the Oslo and Bærum area. As you can see, his childhood neighbourhood still holds a special place in his heart:

'Nothing eases my mind more than this place.'

'My local resort, where it all started. It's 5 minutes from Rykkinn, and it's where me and the rest of RK1 were riding every day when we were younger. Such a good community and slope!'

'There are a lot of places to swim in the Oslo area, but for me this is one of the prettiest. You have some jumping possibilities and the chance to hang out.'

'One of my favourite places to come to relax in Oslo. It's right by Skur 13 as well, so you can go there after a skate session. Just enough space and variety to get your mind and your body right.'

'A town between Oslo and Rykkinn, and also where I work. It's a peaceful town with everything nearby. My favourite spot in Sandvika is Tanken, which is a place for creative minds and independent artists and businesses. In the same place there's also Prammen with some of the best food in the area.'

Frognerbadet – outdoor pool complex

'This place is one of a kind! To have an outdoor pool area in Norway is not the best idea, since our winters as so long. But this place makes the summer complete; no summers in Oslo without a military dive from the diving tower at Frognerbadet.'
