Nearly everything is within walking distance in Oslo, including the beaches. Some of the most popular spots for swimming are right in the middle of the city centre. The Sørenga fjord pool and the beach and swimming pier at Tjuvholmen are right next to the major attractions in downtown Oslo. If you prefer more natural surroundings, the beaches of the Bygdøy peninsula and the islands in the Oslo fjord are popular options.

There are, however, many other alternatives along the fjord, Oslo’s pristine rivers and the tranquil lakes in the forests all around the city.

On this map, we have collected the best spots for a refreshing urban swim, all of which are easily accessible with public transport or by bike.

Safety and health in the fjord

Swimming in natural bodies of water is not recommended for 24 hours after heavy rain. Find more information on water quality and temperature on the Norwegian website of the municipality of Oslo.

At some of the beaches, especially those at the fjord, there can be sharp stones and mussles in the water. Use of water shoes is recommended.
